New extractor fans have been installed over the welding and grinding area of the factory |
The new fans have improved the working environment and reduced dust levels in the grinding/welding area. Previously dust in the air made it difficult to breathe comfortably and workers would find that their clothes were covered in dust at the end of their shift. To combat this workers wore masks and were provided with work wear. Following the installation of the extraction unit workers find the atmosphere a lot more comfortable as they can breathe freely in the production area no longer find it necessary to wear masks. |

Cast aluminium furniture with cushions |
The raw material specification of these products has been changed so that they use 100% recycled aluminium and cast iron for these products, moving from a situation where the level was variable but typically around 50%. |
We have been able to replace approximately 180 tonnes of primary aluminium and 100 tonnes of primary cast iron across our range, which a commensurate reduction in carbon footprint and a reduced need for mining |
|
|
Cast iron, resin and timber furniture |
A new machine has been installed to clean the cast iron after it has been cast. Traditionally this was done manually, using angle grinders. |
The previous manual angle grinding, generated a huge amount of dust. Although workers used masks this dust meant that the atmosphere throughout the factory was unpleasant and unhealthy. This dust has now been completely eliminated so that masks no longer have to be worn |

Cane and rattan furniture with cushions |
We have re-specified the packaging of our products. Several products used to be packed in large square cardboard shipment cartons, with lightweight materials around each individual product. We have now done away with the large shipment cardboard and pack each product individually - providing each one with stronger packaging than they had before |
There are two environmental benefits. The first is that we are using 40% less cardboard per product. By the time the new packaging is being used across the whole range this will equate to an annual saving of 4 tonnes of cardboard per annum. The second saving is that we can now fit more products into a container, meaning that we have to use fewer containers to ship our annual sales from Indonesia. We estimate that we will need 3 -4 fewer forty foot containers. The average amount of energy to ship a 40 foot container for one kilometre equates to168 grams of CO2 emissions. The approximate shipping distance is 16,335 kilometres, so the total saving in CO2 emissions due to this change will be in the order of 8.2 - 11 tonnes of CO2 |
